The Scarlet Robe
Intro: This is what they did to Jesus before they crucified him. There are some deep bible meanings here. This was a Roman Paludamentum which was a short mantle fastened at the shoulders. The robe hung loosely over the shoulders, it was opened in the front, and it fastened across the chest with a clasp. Mark 15:17 and John 19:2 call it a purple robe. The robe was commonly either white or purple. This scarlet (purple) robe was a Military cloak. This was used to mock Jesus of his Royalty, it was put on him after he had been stripped of his outer garment. But I believe God was using this to rub the Devil’s nose in what was getting ready to happen. Let us look to the meaning of this robe.
1.
The Sacrifical Robe: ScarletA. Exodus 25:2 Speak unto the children of Israel, that they bring me an offering: of every man that giveth it willingly with his heart ye shall take my offering. Jesus was that willing offering. He said that no man takes His life but He would lay it down freely. He was willing to die for the sins of the world. In vs. 4 two of those offerings were scarlet and purple.
B. Exodus 26:31 And thou shalt make a vail of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen of cunning work: with cherubims shall it be made: Those colors were used in the making of the vail of the temple, and behind the vail was the ark of the covenant (3 things was in the ark, a bowl of manna, Aaron’s rod that budded, and the tablet of stone of the law of God) and the mercy seat, the place where God and man could come together. Jesus is the place where we can come to God, 1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
2.
The Soldiers Robe: the Military garmentA. this robe speaks of the battle Jesus was facing, the battle for our souls, this was prophesied in Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
3.
The Sovereign Robe: the Kings' robeA. Luke 19:38 Praise to the King
B. Malachi 1:14 Proclamation of the King
C. John 18:36 Place of the Kingdom
D. Revelation 15:3 People he is King over
4.
The Second Coming Robe: Vesture=robeA. Jesus is going to do battle again, the battle of Armageddon Revelation 19:13 vesture (robe) dipped in blood
B. vs. 15 not much of a battle
C. vs. 16 what was written on his robe
Conclusion: When they put the scarlet robe on him they were unknowingly conforming the scripture about who he said he was. Who do you say he is? Is he your sacrifice for sin, do you let him go to battle for you and fight for you, or do you recognize him as KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS?
