Bearing Precious Seed!
Psalms 126:1-6
* Psalms 126 is a psalm about Israel coming out of captivity about the time of Ezra. The metaphor seems to be this: A poor farmer has had a very bad harvest: a very scanty portion of grain and food has been gathered from the earth. The seed time is now come, and is very unpromising. Out of the famine a little seed has been saved to be sown, in hopes of another crop; but the badness of the present season almost precludes the entertainment of hope. He leaves his couch to go forth into the frosty air and tread the heavy soil; and as he goes he weeps because of past failures, or because the ground is so sterile, or the weather so unseasonable, or his corn so scarce, and his enemies so plentiful and so eager to rob him of his reward. But he must sow, or else despair and perish. He carries his all, his precious seed, with him in his seed basket; and with a sorrowful heart commits it to the furrow, watering it in effect with his tears, and earnestly imploring the blessing of God upon it. God hears; the season becomes mild; he beholds successively the blade, the ear, and the full corn in the ear. The appointed weeks of harvest come, and the grain is very productive. He fills his arms, his carriages, with the sheaves and shocks; and returns to his large expecting family in triumph, praising God for the wonders he has wrought. If we are ever going to bring in the sheaves, we should be bearing precious seed.
1. Turning; vs. 1
A. the Lord turned their captivity, many are trying to bear precious
seed without the seed first being in them, remember Paul
B. this turning is like a dream, never thought it could happen. It is an easy thing for God to grant to his people great and surprising
deliverances, and he has often done so in the hour of their deepest
distress.
2. Tongue; vs. 2
A. their mouth was filled laughter, and their tongue with singing
B. what we say has a baring on what we sow James 3:5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! Jas 3:6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.
3. Things greatly done; vs. 3
A. every thing good thing comes from God Jas 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
B. It is God that gives the increase, 1Co 3:7 So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.
4. Tears; vs. 5
A. we water with tears that is what makes the seed so precious
B. vs. 6 tells us of the weeping, until we realize how precious he is, and how the work of the Lord is we wont bring in the sheave
C. the sheaves was what was harvested out of the fields
Conclusion: Are we bearing precious seed with the Lost, our Loved ones, the
Laborers in the Lord’s house?
