Rebekah’s Pitcher

Genesis 24:1-27

* Pitcher= an earthenware jar with one or two handles, carried on the head or shoulders for caring water. To break one was so serious as to be a figure for death. In the home the water was poured into a larger pot for household use. After they went to the well to get water, she might have to make several trips to the well before the house pot was full. In this section of scriptures there is something interesting about Rebekah’s pitcher we need to look at.

1. Carried pitcher: vs. 15

A. sometimes ladies carry the home
B. for a woman work is never done
C. women shoulder a lot (respect, responsibility)

2. Filled pitcher: vs. 16

A. her pitcher was full because she kept her character (very fair to look upon, a virgin)
B. she was keeping herself for that special man (she would keep herself to this one man)
C. some ladies try to fill their pitchers many ways, but there is no place like home

3. Drinking of the pitcher: vs. 17

A. she gave of herself (that was her pitcher) she didn’t have to give water from it, but she did
B. thank God for a mother who will give of herself

4. Let down pitcher: vs. 18

A. before she could ever give someone a drink, her pitcher had to be let down
B. in life there is a lot of letdowns (friends, family)
C. don’t let the letdowns keep you down, keep drawing water from the well

5. Emptied pitcher: vs. 20

A. her pitcher got empty
B. sometimes this happens to women (empty nest, empty because of death, empty marriage)
C. but she ran to the well and drew water again (God has a purpose and a plan for your life

Conclusion: Are you caring your pitcher? Is your pitcher full? Are you giving a drink from your pitcher? Has your pitcher been let down? Or is your pitcher empty? Run to the well and fill it again!
